Which roof rack is right for your 24+ Land Cruiser or GX 550? We break down every option we carry — Front Runner, Rago, Dissent, ARB, KC HiLites, and more.
Roof Rack Shootout: Best Roof Racks for the 24+ Land Cruiser & GX 550
The LC250Mods team breaks down every rack we carry — so you can pick the right one for your build.
Why This Guide Exists
The 250 Series Land Cruiser and GX 550 have attracted an incredible lineup of roof rack options since launch. That's great news — but it also means the decision isn't easy. Platform style, accessory ecosystem, weight, fitment, and compatibility with light bars or RTTs all factor in before you bolt anything to your roof.
We've put together this shootout to break down every rack we carry, what it does best, and who it's built for. This will be an honest look at what's on the market so you can make the right call for your rig.

What to Consider Before Buying
Before diving into the individual racks, here are the questions worth asking yourself:
How will you primarily use the rack? Carrying an RTT and camping gear is a very different load case than mounting a light bar and keeping things clean and low-profile. Some racks are purpose-built for one; others do both well.
Do you want a full-platform or a rail system? Full-platform racks give you a solid surface for gear, tents, and overlanding accessories. Rail/basket-style systems tend to be lighter and lower-profile — great if lighting and minimal cargo are the priority.
What's your accessory plan? Every brand has its own mounting ecosystem. If you're already sold on Front Runner accessories or Rago light mounts, that should influence which rack you start with.
LC250 or GX 550? Most racks come in platform-specific variants. We've noted compatibility throughout this guide.
The Racks
Front Runner Slimline II — The Overland Workhorse
The Slimline II is the gold standard for full-platform overland racks, and it earns its reputation. It's one of the most accessory-rich ecosystems in the off-road world — if you can imagine an add-on, Front Runner probably makes it. The aluminum platform is open enough for airflow and light enough not to destroy your fuel economy, while remaining strong enough to haul serious weight.
The Slimline II sits a bit taller than the Slimsport, which is worth considering if you have a garage with a tight clearance. But for anyone planning a fully loaded expedition rig — RTT, jerry cans, lights, a camp table — this is an outstanding platform to build around.
Available for both the 24+ Land Cruiser and 24+ GX 550.
Best for: Serious overlanders who want maximum accessory flexibility and plan to load the rack up.
Front Runner Slimsport — Sleek, Light, and Lighting-Ready
The Slimsport takes everything that makes the Slimline II great and trims it down into a lower-profile, cleaner-looking package. It's lighter, sits closer to the roofline, and arguably looks better on a daily driver that occasionally hits the trail.
The Slimsport comes in a standard version and a Lightbar Ready version that includes a front crossbar pre-positioned for a 40" light bar mount — a smart touch if that's in your plans. Both are available for the GX 550 as well, including the GX 550 Lightbar Ready version.
The Front Runner accessory ecosystem works across both Slimline and Slimsport, so everything from the jerry can holder to the spare tire mount bolts right up.
Best for: Owners who want a clean, versatile rack that handles lighting and moderate cargo without the added height of the Slimline II.
Rago Fabrication HD Aluminum Roof Rack — American-Made, Overbuilt by Design
Rago is a Arizona-based fabricator that's built a cult following among Toyota and Lexus owners for one reason: they overbuild everything. The HD Aluminum Roof Rack is no exception. It's a full-platform aluminum rack machined to fit the LC250/GX550 roofline with tight tolerances, and it's designed to carry a serious load without flex or fatigue.
The Rago comes in two configurations: a standard version and a version with an integrated light pocket up front. The light pocket is a clean, purpose-built mounting solution for a front light bar that keeps things flush and intentional. Rago also makes their own deck panels, window molle panels, and light mounts that are designed around this platform.
Best for: Owners who want a made-in-the-USA rack with serious build quality, huge total weight capacity, and its own lighting/molle ecosystem to build out.
Dissent Off-Road Aluminum Roof Rack — Custom Fab, Purpose Built
Dissent is one of the newer names on the LC250 scene, but they're quickly earning a reputation for thoughtful design and quality fabrication. Their Aluminum Roof Rack Kit is available in multiple configurations — including a version with an integrated wind fairing that accommodates a 40" light bar up front in a particularly clean package.
The Dissent rack has a distinct aesthetic — more angular and aggressive than some of the competition — and it fits the LC250/GX550 roofline well. If you want to go further with the look, Dissent also offers a black hardware upgrade kit that replaces the standard fasteners with blacked-out hardware for a more intentional, monochromatic finish.
Best for: Owners who want a rack with a more aggressive aesthetic and appreciate the extra attention to detail these racks have baked in.
Sherpa Atlas Roof Rack — Clean Platform, Great Value
The Sherpa Atlas is a solid aluminum full-platform rack that punches above its weight on fit and finish. It's one of the cleaner-looking options in the lineup — the platform geometry is tight and the mounting system is designed specifically for the LC250/GX550.
Sherpa also makes a window molle storage panel set that integrates well with the Atlas for added exterior storage. If you're building a trail rig on a slightly tighter budget without compromising on quality, the Atlas deserves a serious look.
Best for: Owners who want a clean, capable full-platform rack with a strong price-to-quality ratio.
UpTop Overland Kilo Roof Rack — Minimalist Platform, Maximum Flexibility
The UpTop Overland Kilo is a relatively new entrant to the LC250 market and one of the more interesting options available. It's a platform-style rack with a more open, lightweight design — giving you a usable deck without the bulk of a fully enclosed basket.
UpTop has put real thought into their accessory ecosystem. The light bar mounting kit is a universal solution that mounts any single-row light bar up to 40" cleanly to your rack. They also make grab handles V2 — compatible with UpTop, Prinsu, Front Runner, and other platforms — and window molle storage panels for exterior storage.
Currently available for the 24+ Land Cruiser.
Best for: Owners who want a lighter, more open-platform rack with a growing accessory lineup.
Prinsu Pro Roof Rack — Trail-Tested, Community Favorite
Prinsu has been a fixture in the Toyota overlanding community for years, and their Pro Rack brings that track record to the 250 Series platform. The design is well-established — a clean, full-platform aluminum rack that balances load capacity with aesthetics and comes in at a competitive price point.
The Prinsu ecosystem includes a window molle storage panel set, a quick release awning mount for attaching your overland awning without permanent hardware, and a rear ladder if easy access is a priority. If you're already familiar with the Prinsu platform from a previous rig, transitioning to the LC250 variant will feel right at home.
Currently available for the 24+ Land Cruiser.
Best for: Owners looking for a proven, community-tested platform with awning and molle add-on support.
DV8 Off-Road Roof Rack — Low-Profile, Modular, with an Aggressive Look
The DV8 Roof Rack stands out in this lineup because it's partially steel, contributing to its overall strength and its aesthetic. DV8's signature is a lower, more aggressive profile that sits tight to the roofline and leans into a tactical, blacked-out look.
DV8 also offers a purpose-built roof rack light mount designed to integrate light bars or pods cleanly into the DV8 platform. If you're building a truck with a more aggressive, urban-trail aesthetic and don't need the full expedition capability of a heavier aluminum platform, the DV8 is worth a look.
Best for: Owners who prioritize a low-profile, aggressive aesthetic and don't mind the added weight of partial steel construction.
ARB Base Roof Rack — Maximum Cargo, Wind-Managed
ARB is one of the most recognized names in overland equipment globally, and their Base Rack for the LC250/GX550 reflects that pedigree. It's a full-platform steel rack with high side walls for cargo retention and comes with an integrated wind deflector to help manage noise and aerodynamic drag at highway speeds — a meaningful feature if you're logging interstate miles between destinations.
The ARB kit is on the heavier end of the options here, but what you get in return is a serious cargo platform with a global brand behind it and broad accessory compatibility.
Best for: Owners who prioritize maximum cargo capacity and appreciate a proven global brand with highway-friendly aerodynamics.
KC HiLites Platform One — Lighting and Structure, Combined
The KC HiLites Platform One is the most unique option in this lineup because it's designed as much around lighting as it is around cargo. The Platform One integrates directly with KC's lighting ecosystem — most notably the Gravity Titan light bar — turning the front of the rack into a seamless light mounting solution rather than an afterthought.
It's at the top of the price range, and it earns that position for a specific type of buyer: the owner who wants a premium lighting-forward build and wants the rack and light system to feel like a single cohesive unit. If you're going to run KC lights, this is how to do it right.
Best for: Lighting-focused builds where the integration between the rack and KC HiLites lighting system is the priority.
Rago Overland Crossmembers for OEM Rack — Upgrade What You Have
Not ready to swap out the factory roof rails? The Rago Overland Crossmembers are a clever solution that mounts to the LC250/GX550's OEM roof rack rails, transforming them into a functional overlanding platform without a full rack replacement. It's a great entry point for owners who want to start carrying gear and accessories before committing to a full rack upgrade.
Best for: Owners who want to add overland capability to the factory roof rails before upgrading to a dedicated rack.
