Overview
Why Your LC250 Needs a Transmission Cooler
The LC250 came from the factory without a dedicated air-to-oil transmission cooler. Instead, it relies solely on a coolant-to-oil heat exchanger integrated into the radiator — an arrangement that works adequately under normal driving conditions but falls short when things get demanding.
The bigger issue is how Toyota set up the 4WD system. In 4-Hi, the torque converter stays unlocked the vast majority of the time. All that slip generates heat — a lot of it. If you're running larger tires, climbing sustained grades, or doing trail work in 4-Hi, ATF temps can climb fast enough to trigger an overheat warning. This is a well-documented characteristic of the TNGA-platform trucks, not an anomaly, and it's exactly the kind of condition a proper auxiliary cooler is designed to handle.
About This Kit
The Mishimoto transmission cooler was originally developed for the Tacoma and briefly listed as plug-and-play for the LC250 before Mishimoto pulled that claim back for further testing. We pulled our listing at the same time — we weren't going to sell something without knowing exactly what the install looks like on our platform.
Forum member phxdsrtrat over at LandCruiserForum.com has since done the install and documented exactly what's needed. There are two fitment issues to address:
Modification 1 — Cooler Clearance at the A/C Condenser The LC250 has an additional bracket on the A/C condenser not found on the Tacoma. Grind down the included hex bolt spacers to move the cooler slightly forward and you're clear.
Modification 2 — Pipe Manifold Length The included manifold is sized for the Tacoma's layout and comes up short on the LC250. You'll need a longer section of hose to complete the loop without kinking. The whole thing sits behind the intake and hot-side charge pipe, so it's fully hidden once the engine bay is buttoned up.
Neither modification requires special tools or fabrication beyond basic grinding.
Who Should Consider This If you run larger tires, wheel trails in 4-Hi, tow regularly, or drive in sustained heat, this is a proven and clean solution. Thank you to phxdsrtrat for doing the legwork so the rest of us don't have to.
